Bio

Mi name is Alvaro Medina García. I’m a musician, I live in Chile, and I was born the last century.

I make music since I was 15 years old, I started playing keyboard and other instruments in a folklore group in high school. In 1997, with my sister and other friend, we founded “Escaso Aporte”, a mestizo-rock band with influences from Mano Negra, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and other latin bands from the late 90s. I stayed with the band 15 years (with a 4 year hiatus in between); during that time I was part of the 2nd and 3rd albums and several videos.

Like any good computer nerd, it was unavoidable that I took interest in the digital music production, so I started to research and took my first steps around ’98, recording the first demos of “Escaso Aporte”. The result was absolutely rookie, but it made me more interested in learning further. I sketched my early compositions in music notation software playing thru MIDI to a Casio keyboard, and in time I adopted better software and gear. Today I compose and produce in a variety of software, mainly Reaper, Ableton Live y Cubase.

My influences and styles are diverse. I am a child of rock, classical music and southamerican folklore; later I expanded my tastes towards hip-hop and electronics. Among the artists that have influenced me are Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Inti Illimani, Illapu, Los Prisioneros, Los Jaivas; Los Fabulous Cadillacs, Mano Negra, Maldita Vecindad; Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd; John Williams, Debussy, Stravinsky, Ravel, Beethoven; Vangelis, Tomita, Joakin Bello.

Besides Escaso Aporte, I played keyboard in Johnny Olas, a ska-pop band; and live band of Ponchoik, singer-songwriter who fuses reggae with rap and Andean sounds. This project allowed me to return to the sounds of folklore, this time from the synthesizers.
